KUWAIT: Ambassador Deborah K. Jones officially opened the U.S. Embassy Kuwait’s Independence Day celebration on February 24, 2011, with remarks commemorating the 235th birthday of the United States.

Noting this week’s celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of Kuwait’s independence, the 20th anniversary of Kuwait’s Liberation and the 5th anniversary of the Amir’s ascendance, she said, “We join our host nation, Kuwait, in this week’s celebrations by holding our own annual Independence Day reception this evening, which we traditionally hold around this time of year on our own “President’s Day.”

Guest of Honor Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohamed Al-Sabah and more than 1,000 guests took part in the evening’s activities, including many members and senior leaders of the U.S. and Kuwaiti armed forces and “Desert Storm” coalition partners. Music was provided by the U.S. Air Force band and the Chris Byars/Ari Roland Jazz Septet, which is performing in Kuwait in conjunction with the nation-wide celebrations. The U.S. Army Old Guard performed to honor the more than half a million members of the 34-nation Coalition, including the hundreds of troops who sacrificed their lives during the Liberation.

In addition to honoring the birth of the United States, the Ambassador took the opportunity to celebrate the long-standing and strong relationship between the United States and the government and people of Kuwait. She also noted that it has been an honor and great privilege to serve for nearly three years as the senior U.S. representative to Kuwait and to share in the unique friendship the U.S. enjoys with the Kuwaiti people.
