KUWAIT: On Sunday, February 07, 2010 Dasman Diabetes Institute held a seminar titled “Strategies for Behavior Change in Diabetes Education” by Melinda Maryniuk, Director Clinical Education Programs, Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston.

Maryniuk talked about changing the behavior of those who deal with a diabetic through different strategies by changing their tools by focusing on the patient since diabetes is a self management disease, listening carefully to the patient and consider patient’s Education, Historical Medical Record, health fears, understandings and misunderstanding.

Maryniuk highlighted the fact that despite all advances in Diabetes treatment education remains a cornerstone and essential of diabetes management noting that the more diabetics learn about how these factors affect them, the better control they will be able to live longer. She also quoted Elliot P. Joslin, Joslin’s Center Founder by saying “The Person with diabetes who knows the most lives the longest.”

She said “ in Joslin institute we reformed the way we think about Diabetes education where it is becoming a more patient Centric” noting that in traditional treatment goes around an expert in diabetes while in the patient centered treatment depends on behavior change expert.

She praised the alliance between the two institutions describing Dasman Center as an advanced health institution with its amazing possibilities and potential for research, treatment and education.

She went on to say “ Diabetes is a self management diseases, if we think about 8760 hours in a year , how many of these hours are actually spent with the doctor? Who cares of the patient during these hours? Our job is to make sure that they know enough to be able to manager themselves to identify small cuts wounds, indentify problems and take an appropriate action, Therefore education helps them to be problem solvers and manage their diabetes.”
